75th historic Garden Week in Virginia
Boxwood Sale April 19-27
Boxwoods have been growing for hundreds of years on the ancient grounds of the “Old Brick” Church. Introduced to North America from Europe in the mid 1600s, these evergreen shrubs have survived the ravages of time, from the War of 1812, and on through the Civil War to the present. Rooted in the past, the boxwood is considered “man’s oldest garden ornament.” Not only are they decorative, their magnificent foliage creates a sanctuary for resident rabbits, squirrels, and a menagerie of birds throughout St. Luke’s uniquely serene graveyard.
A few years ago, Historic St. Luke’s Church provided cuttings to a local nursery, The English Connection, for propagation of our oldest boxwoods to be offered during America’s 400 th Anniversary of Jamestown and beyond. More of these tenderly cultivated shrubs are now ready and available to the public with proceeds going toward the preservation of the historic church and grounds.
The boxwoods will be available April 19 - 27, 2008, just in time for the 2008 Historic Garden Week in Virginia 75 th Anniversary. For more information about purchasing the boxwoods call Historic St. Luke’s Church (757) 357-3367.
