Boxwood Sale

Boxwoods have been growing for hundreds of years on the ancient grounds of the “Old Brick” Church. Introduced to North America from Europe in the mid 1600’s, these evergreen shrubs have survived the ravages of time, from the War of 1812, and on through the Civil War to the present. Rooted in the past, the boxwood is considered “man’s oldest garden ornament.” Not only are they decorative, their magnificent foliage creates a sanctuary for resident rabbits, squirrels, and a menagerie of birds throughout St. Luke’s uniquely serene graveyard.

A few years ago, Historic St. Luke’s Church provided cuttings to a local nursery, The English Connection, for propagation of our oldest boxwoods to be offered during America’s 400th Anniversary of Jamestown and beyond. More of these tenderly cultivated shrubs are now ready and available to the public with proceeds going toward the preservation of the historic church and grounds.

The boxwoods will be available April 18 - 25, 2009, during the 76th Historic Garden Week in Virginia. For more information about purchasing the boxwoods call Historic St. Luke’s Church (757) 357-3367.

History Camp

Once again Historic St. Luke's is collaborating with Isle of Wight County Museum for History Camp program. In the past years the event covered the time period of the early 1600's to the Civil War. Children made their own bricks in the same manner settlers did in the 1600's, with their feet! Camp participants enlisted in the Confederate Army that camped at St. Luke's in 1861/2. Last year, students explored WW I and WW II and planted Victory Gardens, joined the USO and learned how to Swing dance. Keep and eye out for more information on this year’s History Camp. It is open to rising 4th through 7th graders.
